ABOUT JOSÉ ALMEIDA · INDEPENDENT DATA ADVISOR
I am an independent Data Strategy, Data Governance, Data Quality and Master Data Management consultant and advisor, with more than 25 years of experience helping organisations improve the reliability, management and business value of their data.
My career has taken me across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, working with organisations facing complex operational, reporting, integration and transformation challenges.
I work where business priorities meet data management—turning strategy into practical actions, stronger controls and better decisions.

MY PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE
Over more than 25 years in data management, I have seen organisations invest heavily in technology, platforms and transformation programmes while continuing to struggle with the same fundamental questions: Which information can we trust? Who has the authority to resolve disagreements? Where should we invest first? How do we know whether the work is creating value?
My approach starts with the business problem.
Whether the challenge involves unreliable financial reporting, inconsistent customer data, unclear governance responsibilities or the data foundations required for AI, the first priority is to understand the decisions and processes affected.
From there, I work with business and technology stakeholders to establish practical priorities, strengthen data management capabilities and deliver improvements that can be recognised by the business.
I believe effective data management should make organisations easier to operate, decisions easier to defend and transformation investments more valuable.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
My international experience covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, working with organisations operating in different regulatory, commercial and technology environments.
This has reinforced the importance of adapting data management approaches to business realities rather than applying the same framework everywhere.

Core data disciplines
CORE EXPERTISE
My core expertise sits across four connected data management disciplines. They work best when designed around the business outcomes, decisions and risks they need to support.
Connecting data priorities, investments and capabilities to business objectives and measurable value.
Establishing practical decision rights, accountability, stewardship and operating processes.
Improving confidence in critical information by addressing issues at their source and prioritising business impact.
Creating consistency across critical customer, supplier, product and reference data domains.
Additional capabilities include metadata management, data catalogues, stewardship development, data operating models and AI-ready data foundations.
SELECTED EXPERIENCE
My experience includes engagements involving enterprise data governance, master data management, data quality, data cataloguing and reporting across complex organisations.
The examples below illustrate the breadth of environments and challenges I have worked with.
Project experience involving customer master and reference data, BI integration and the data governance foundations supporting a banking analytics programme.
Experience in an enterprise MDM implementation, supporting consistent management of important business entities across a complex technology environment.
Experience supporting the implementation of enterprise data catalogue and information governance capabilities in a financial institution.
Project experience covering customer data management, data cleansing and enrichment, and data quality control capabilities.
HOW I WORK
Experience has reinforced a few principles that guide how I approach data challenges. They help keep initiatives focused, practical and accountable to the business.
Every data initiative should support a meaningful business objective.
Concentrate on the decisions, risks and processes where better data makes the greatest difference.
Deliver targeted improvements while building foundations that can evolve.
Business leaders should shape priorities, responsibilities and acceptable trade-offs.
Embed governance and quality into existing workflows, platforms and operating processes.
Demonstrate improvements in cost, control, speed, risk or decision confidence.
I believe organisations achieve more with focused improvements that change how the business operates than with large programmes that create activity without visible value.
HOW I WORK
Alongside consulting, I contribute perspectives on business-led data strategy, data governance, data quality, master data management and AI-ready data foundations through publications, professional communities and industry discussions.
Featured among the data management professionals recognised by DataManagementU.
Published by Data Governance Africa, examining how organisations translate AI governance principles into operational decisions.
Independent writing on governance, data confidence, master data, operating models and business decisions.
PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS
I work with organisations that need senior expertise to resolve critical data challenges, strengthen existing programmes or provide independent advice on important decisions.
Engagements can be structured around a defined outcome or an agreed period of delivery support.
Senior support for established programmes and teams.
Agreed business challenge, scope and deliverables.
Independent guidance for leadership decisions.
Based in Portugal, I prioritise remote consulting, freelance, contract and interim assignments across EMEA. Hybrid or onsite engagements may be considered depending on the client, scope and location.
LET'S WORK TOGETHER
Whether you need an independent advisor, a focused consulting engagement or an experienced senior consultant to support a transformation programme, I would welcome a conversation.
Share the business problem, the outcomes you want to achieve and the support you need. We can then determine whether there is a good fit.
